PD*26517466A police sniffer dog dies of a rare nose cancer after years of sniffing cocaine on the job.

Max, a springer spaniel, is said to have caught the disease from the effects of cocaine and other drugs he was trained to detect.

The dog’s owner, Police Inspector Anne Higgins, fears all the training may be the reason they had to put the dog down. ”It is ironic the wonderful organ that made him successful in his work has been his demise,” Higgins said.

“It was very hard to have him put down but we had to do it,” she continued. Read the rest of this entry »

Obama put his foot down when it came to Citigroup’s high-flying execs trying to  use taxpayer money to but $50 million  jet.

On Monday an Obama official called Citigroup and complained about the company’s new plan to buy the 12-seater aircraft, which by the way has leather interior, sofas, and an entertainment center.

The official told them to” fix it.” Read the rest of this entry »

The recent temblors that have hit the Los Angeles area the last couple of weeks have prompted some researchers to take a closer look at the San Andreas fault line for any new signs of the “big one.”

So brace yourselves, a new study has found that large earthquakes have rumbled along the southern section of the fault more frequently than previous years, suggesting a stronger earthquake may on its way.

Scientists at UC Irvine have found major earthquakes occurred roughly every 137 years over the last 700 years around the Carrizo Plain section of the San Andreas.

Until now, scientists believed powerful earthquakes occurred around every 200 years, not 137 years as the new study suggests.   Read the rest of this entry »

Edward Richardson

I guess I owe the Pope an apology for mocking his warnings of the evils of facebook in my previous post.

A British man was sentenced to at least 18 years in prison Thursday, for murdering his wife after she changed her relationship status on facebook to, “single.”

Edward Richardson, 41, stabbed his wife Sarah, 26, in a “frenzied and brutal” attack at her parents’ home last May. The couple had been separated the previous month, said Fiona Cortese, a spokeswoman for the Crown Prosecution Service.

“Richardson became enraged when Sarah changed her marital status on facebook to single and decided to go and see her as she was not responding to his (text) messages,” Cortese said. Read the rest of this entry »

Pope warns against “obsessive” facebooking

23 01 2009

Missing Call Letters.

pope-facebook-finished1So I thought this was kind of funny. To celebrate the World Day of Communication, which I didn’t even know was a day, Pope Benedict XVI warns the world that social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace can isolate people and marginalize others.

Il Papa did say that Facebook can foster friendships and understanding as well.

Benedict welcomes social networking sites as a “gift” that fosters the “fundamental desire” of people to communicate.

On the downside though, the Pope thinks that the “obsessive” virtual socializing can isolate people from real interaction and deepen the digital divide by excluding those already marginalized.

The Pope also urges producers to ensure that the content of these sites respect human dignity and the “goodness and intimacy of human sexuality.”

Best part…it was all done on the Vatican’s new Youtube channel.  That’s right, the Pope officially is on youtube. If the old, traditional Catholic Church is jumping on the online media bandwagon, no one has an excuse not to have a facebook now.

When brown can stick around…text of Rev. Lowery’s benediction

21 01 2009

Although I enjoyed listening to Obama make sweet love to the English languague, Rev. Joseph Lowery’s benediction took the cake.  Here’s the full text and video of the benediction. Scroll down to the last paragraph or skip to about 4:47 in the video for the funny part.

Text of the benediction by Rev. Joseph Lowery during President Barack Obama’s inauguration, as transcribed by CQ Transcriptions:

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou, who has brought us thus far along the way, thou, who has by thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path we pray, lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee.

Shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand true to thee, oh God, and true to our native land.

We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we’ve shared this day.

We pray now, oh Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration. Read the rest of this entry »

President Obama’s Inaugural Address

President Obama sworn in as the 44th President of the United States

Barack Obama

My fellow citizens:

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans. Read the rest of this entry »
